The Australian SAS - True Collectable


Commissioned by the Australian Special Air Service Association, the stunning original artwork of 'The Australian SAS' was officially unveiled at the Regiments 50th Anniversary celebrations held September 2007. A true collectable, just 1000 prints WORLDWIDE of the original have been released featuring signatures of the artist Ian Coates, the SASR's current Commanding Officer and Regimental Sergeant Major.
The Artist
An ex soldier himself, Ian discharged from the Australian Army to pursue a career as an artist/illustrator. He has produced various illustrations for magazines and books and has acted as a visual historian, creating artworks for numerous museums around Australia. Ian has produced military prints for collectors worldwide including 'Timor', 'The Peacekeepers' and other works relating to the SASR. Ian's originals are displayed in Museums across Australia including the Battalion Museums in Sydney and Brisbane, the SASR and Western Australian Military Museum in Perth. The signed prints are becoming highly prized by military collectors not only in Australia but worldwide.
The Painting's Meaning
The five central figures represent the different periods in the SASR's history, (1st - Company Days & Borneo, 2nd - Vietnam, 3rd - The Training Years & Counter-Terrorism, 4th - Peacekeeping & Timor, 5th - Middle East). These figures stand together as a wall protecting Australia which is coloured to represent the Sandy Beret worn by the men of the SAS. The blue ocean, behind the Southern Cross, represents the Australian flag, and behind the Winged Dagger represents the SASR banner. Finally, the sea of historical images pays homage to the versatility and sacrifice of the SAS soldier.
