A VIOLENT bag-snatcher ambushing and threatening to kill women walking Melbourne's streets at night is becoming more vicious, slashing one of his most recent victims with a knife.
Terrified victims have told how the armed robber attacks by stealth and is not afraid to use force.
The man has struck at least 12 times, robbing 18 women, mostly in the inner city, since late March.
He stalks women, most of whom were walking along a street, and threatens to injure or kill them if they resist his demands to give up their handbags.
The man has struck on weekends and Wednesdays between 7pm and 11pm in Armadale, Richmond, Prahran, Malvern, Caulfield, Port Melbourne, Windsor and South Yarra.
But on Tuesday he attacked in Fairbank Rd, Clayton South, at 7.15pm. Police have branded the offender gutless.
He slashed one victim, Kristina, 24, after he rushed her from behind in Orrong Rd, Caulfield, at 9pm on Sunday.
She said she no longer felt safe and was haunted by the attacker's face after he slashed at her arm and cut her leather jacket.
"I started screaming and refused to give the bag," Kristina said.
"I felt really helpless because I thought, 'This is my own environment and how dare you attack me right where I live in'."
Neighbours came to Kristina's aid after hearing her cries as she chased the attacker around a corner.
"I haven't been able to walk alone at night ever since," she said.
"When I wake up . . . the first thing I remember is his face."
Another victim, Deepti, said she now sleeps with her lights on after she was grabbed in an attack on her and a friend in Queens Ave, Caulfield, on April 28.

It's just LUCK that these women aren't DEAD!
Where's the dignity in being a victim? The right to self-defence in Australia?
Make it an election issue Australia! Time to get mature with guns.

Were I in Australia, I would be sorely tempted to carry a weapon anyway.
Better to be tried by twelve than carried by six.
Good point but most Aussies respect the law. It's the crims who carry the guns today in gun controlled countries. No right to self defense - thanks UN - NOT.
