SECURITY guards have opened fire on a gang of robbers, shooting one man who later died in hospital after being dumped there by his accomplices or a family member.

The brazen shoot-out unfolded last night in one of the busiest streets in Parramatta, west Sydney.

The masked bandits attempted to ambush the Armaguard security guards as they were about to deliver cash to the National Australia Bank on George St.

The guards were threatened by the trio at 6.40pm. At least two of the robbers were armed.

Instead of handing over their guns and cash, two of the three guards pulled out their weapons and opened fire.

Here's some interesting comments :

Of course I highly doubt that you will find any reference to the robbers and mob's religio/ethnic indentification in any of the media reports.

Dead set, a clear message needs to be sent to criminals, particularly those choosing to use excessive force will be dealt with in kind. The Guards are trained and armed for that very reason. If this goes against the Armaguards I'm moving to Singapore! -A web comment

A hundred people rocked up at the hospital? Word spreads quick in the middle of the night!

Thats why they carry guns isn't it? Bad news that the guy died but good on the guards for doing their jobs. Medal for bravery is deserved for the guards and even if the other robbers aren't caught they'll have to live with the guilt of letting their friend die alone.

Near-riot at hospital after fatal shooting
Wednesday, August 20, 2008

Police have been forced to avert a near-riot outside a western Sydney hospital after a critically wounded man was dumped at the front door.

The 25-year-old died shortly after being discovered with a gunshot wound by Auburn Hospital staff at around 7pm.

It is alleged he and two masked accomplices had earlier tried to rob an armoured truck that was parked outside a supermarket in George St, Parramatta.

The two guards allegedly saw one of the men had a firearm and opened fire on the trio, who are said to have escaped in a white Mitsubishi with stolen plates.

As the dead man's family arrived at the hospital they were followed by a crowd of up to 100 young men who at one stage tried to storm the front door.

They were bailed up by police — including members of the Dog Squad — before older family members persuaded them to back away.

Witnesses or those with information relating to the incidents are urged to contact Parramatta Police on (02) 9633 9633 or CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.
