Fighting the good fight

Australian Bushmaster Troop Carrier

Deadly fight ahead - Rudd

April 28, 2008 10:51am

PRIME Minister Kevin Rudd said the public should be prepared to hear about more Australian troop deaths from Afghanistan.

Mr Rudd said the death of Lance Corporal Jason Marks, in a firefight with the Taliban that left four other Australians injured, was a sad day for the nation and a tragic day for his family.

Mr Rudd described Lance Corporal Marks, 27, as “an inspiration to others”.

“My deepest sympathies… go to Lance Corporal Marks’ family, friends and colleagues.

The Prime Minister said the latest death marked the fifth loss of an Australian soldier involved in combat in Afghanistan, and warned the toll was likely to become worse.

"The security situation in Afghanistan remains grim,'' Mr Rudd said.

"I think we must accept that reality and prepare ourselves for it.''

"This is a difficult and remains a difficult and dangerous operating environment for the ADF (Australian Defence Force), most particularly in Oruzgan province.

"It is likely to become more difficult in the period ahead.

"We are facing a change of season, as the winter snows melt and the spring thaw begins, which usually indicates a heightening in military activity on the part of the Taliban and al-Qaeda.''

Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston today said the special forces soldier was killed in a heavy exchange of small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades.

It is believed the wounds of the injured soldiers are not life-threatening.

“Our thoughts and our prayers are also with the four wounded soldiers and their families, ” Mr Rudd said.
