Banging Heads Together at Last!

Aust, US agree to collaboration on counter terrorism

Australia and the United States have agreed to work together on a number of scientific projects to counter terrorism.

The two countries will exchange information about the materials used to make homemade explosives, and regulations controlling those substances.

Scientists from Australia and the US will also be developing a more sophisticated screening system, to detect guns and firearm components in the mail.

The parliamentary secretary to the Prime Minister, Tony Smith, says the details were agreed to at this week's bilateral conference with the US.

"The collaboration will ensure that there's a unity of effort so that both countries will have access to the best science and the best solutions at the earliest possible time," he said.

"It's really been science and technology that's come up with increased screening at airports, increasing detection of terrorist threats and in the future with this sort of investment and collaboration, we'll see more of that."
