File on Australia's recovery from terrorist attack, disease or food shortage kept from public

SECRET report on Australia's ability to recover from a catastrophe is being suppressed by the Government.

The report, prepared in 2005, has been deemed too sensitive for release.

It is believed to look at alarming scenarios such as terrorist strikes, disease pandemics and the total breakdown of food production.

Frightened? ... there was murder in Mumbai, but the Government is staying quiet on how Australia would recover after a terror attack.

The Review of Australia's Ability to Respond to and recover from Catastrophic Disasters was initially suppressed by the Howard government but the Rudd government also wants it kept under wraps.

Opposition Senator Gary Humphries said the public was being kept in the dark because the Government didn't want to frighten people.

"I think that the plans are somewhat under-developed," he said.

"And if you talk to people about bomb attacks or buildings falling down, they'll start to get nervous and panic. But I think it's profoundly dangerous to keep people happy by not giving them the knowledge that they might use."

Saturday nite drunken violence on the city streets of Australia's capitals are a challenge enough for police let alone a group of souped up terrorists with Ak-47's and 300 rounds.

So let's get this right. The Liberal Party commission this report, suppress it, then complain that the Labour Party won't release it. Yet another example of all that is wr...

The report was prepared by the director-general of Emergency Management Australia, Tony Pearce, with input from the states.

In a recent Senate committee hearing, Mr Humphries asked the Attorney-General's Department if the report existed and whether it could be made public.

The department confirmed its existence, but said the report would not be released, even under Freedom of Information legislation.

It said the states and the Commonwealth had agreed "the report would not be released due to the sensitive nature of the data".

Armed response needed at all public service areas such as railway stations etc

Even India had guards with pistols but that was NOT enough to stop the killing!

Anti - Gun Culture made the police too scared to use them.

But is Australia Mature enough to handle the sight of machine guns in public - after years of being made so fearful of them.

The Australian Strategic Policy Institute recently raised doubts over the ability of the nation's health system to cope with a catastrophic terrorist event.

"Since 9/11 Australians have been provided with almost no information on how well their respective jurisdictions are prepared for the medical consequences of a terrorist attack," it said.

"We lack solid, publicly available data on whether our hospitals could provide the necessary surge capacity to deliver critical care to large numbers of people in a catastrophe."

In America once you get past their army, airforce, navy, marines, fbi, cia, national guard etc, before you stop to draw breath, the citizens are upon you with all sorts of weapons and attitude to boot.

With us, once you're past the army, airforce, SAS and coppers, that's it, it's just a few of us with the will to fight and even fewer of us with the means to fight.

If a mumbai-style attack were to occur, heaven forbid, we're screwed.

There will be alot to answer for if an attack at say a premium railway station in Melb happens.

No security at all and 50k plus passengers coming up the esculators during morning peak.

Too horrible to contemplate. But they (terrorists) know this and we are wide open to a huge death toll.
