THE country's most secretive spy agency will be asked to step up its protection of Canberra's Parliament House against cyber attacks by foreign government hackers.
The Defence Signals Directorate will oversee security for a proposed new wireless internet system at Parliament House to ensure foreign powers cannot exploit it to steal political secrets.
The move comes only months after China was reported to have tried to hack into highly classified government computer networks in Australia as part of a broader international operation to secure military secrets from Western nations.
The Howard government did not confirm or deny the cyber attacks when they were first reported by The Australian in September, but government sources said at the time that thwarting such assaults was a continuing challenge.
