Darwin WW2 Catalina Find

Mystery WWII wreck found in Darwin harbour

Article from: AAP

JAPAN'S largest resource company has solved a 60-year-old mystery while surveying the seabed in Darwin Harbour.

The final resting place of the last of six Catalina flying boats has eluded historians for decades.

They were brought to Darwin by the American Navy and were an important part of Darwin's defence during WWII, patrolling Australia's northern waters.

NT Minister for Heritage Len Kiely today announced that "an important part of the territory's history" had been located by Japanese gas giant Inpex, which has plans for a $12 billion liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Darwin.

Geophysical surveys of the seabed are required before Inpex is able to go ahead with laying pipelines and it was while researchers scoured the harbour that they happened across the find.

"This is an exciting find, the site of the last Catalina has been a mystery for over 60 years and now we have the last piece of the puzzle," Mr Kiely said.

Three of the six Catalinas in Darwin were struck during the first Japanese air strike in 1942. They sank in the harbour but no crew members were lost during the attack.

Two men were killed when another Catalina sank after a depth charge accidentally detonated during loading and their bodies were recovered and buried at the Adelaide River War Cemetery.

The fifth Catalina crashed on take-off and sank in August 1945. The crew escaped and Mr Kiely said the wreck can still be seen at very low tides.

The sixth Catalina caught fire before sinking in the harbour.

Darwin Harbour

None of the Catalina sites are war graves or heritage listed, but Mr Kiely said it was important to know their exact position "so they can be properly managed during the construction of any pipelines and infrastructure for the proposed Inpex gas plant".

Propaganda for Pig Kids

Planet Slayer -a web site by the ABC for kids.

Australia's ABC Helps Kids Calculate How Soon They Should Die for Gaia

Anyone who doubts that liberalism is a death cult needs to check out the taxpayer-funded Australia Broadcasting Corporation's kiddy-oriented Greenhouse Calculator, which helps little kids calculate how soon they should die so as to stop being a burden on the planet.

Children are asked,

How big a greenhouse pig are you?

To find the answer, they need to answer questions like, "Do you recycle your waste and compost organic and green wastes?" and "How often do you eat meat?" The bigger the pigs they are, the sooner they deserve to die for Gaia. If you go with the default answers that presumably represent average people, ABC wants you dead at age 9.3.

The site accomplishes two tasks at once, instilling antihuman environmentalist propaganda, while at the same time establishing that authorities are in a position to determine how long you should live.

This is what moonbats present to children online, where their parents can see it. Imagine what they're teaching kids at school.

3 dimensions of warfare

Security on a low budget

National security editor Patrick Walters | May 24, 2008

AFTER almost 45 years in the defence science business, Roger Lough understands one fundamental truth about Australia's defence force.

Charged with protecting 10 per cent of the world's surface area and a sparsely populated continent from external attack, our future military must be driven by technological innovation.

For the Defence Science and Technology Organisation's 2100 scientists and engineers, a large part of that challenge is about how our defence force will be able to do more with less.

"The history of warfare is the history of technology. It's advancing at a rate of knots," Lough observes. And Australia will have to work a lot harder and lift investment in science and technology to stay ahead of the game, he warns.

Lough, 63, retired from the top job at DSTO yesterday after a remarkable career during which he rose from technical assistant grade 1 (temporary) at a defence lab in Salisbury, South Australia, in 1963 to chief of an organisation with 12 research divisions and an annual budget of $370million.

"With a large continent and small population you have to invest in technology (that) is going to minimise the amount of people you are going to utilise, yet maximise the coverage you generate in the three dimensions of warfare: physical space, the electromagnetic sphere and, increasingly, the cyber world which controls the information flow," he tells Inquirer.

That means a sharp focus on surveillance systems and information systems networks will remain top priorities for our defence scientists for the foreseeable future.

Tehran v. Jeddah

Two recent developments on the international stage would appear to be unrelated but, on closer analysis, are linked and important.

1) As "The Economist" reports in the April 26th issue, the new Human Rights Council at the U.N. is "[d]ominated by the Organisation of the Islamic Conference and the Non-Aligned Movement," such that "last month...the council's Islamic members, backed by Russia and China, pushed through a resolution saying free speech should be limited out of 'respect for religions and beliefs'" (meaning: no more Muhammad cartoons, or else).

In creating the HRC "what no one foresaw was the extent to which Islamic states would use this...to single out Israel" ("The U.N. and Human Rights. A Screaming Start"). Actually, a number of us in the States foresaw this; and our fairly objective journalistic friends over in London are understating the case to say that the OIC uses the HRC merely to go after Israel; that free speech-bashing resolution was aimed at the larger West.

2) In an event ignored by the Jurassic Media in the U.S., the head of Iran's Islamic Cultural Relations Organization--aptly named MAHDI Mostafavi--met with Pope Benedict XVI shortly after his return from the U.S., in order to foster relations and dialogue between Roman Catholics and Shi`i Muslims. He even presented the Pope with a copy of the Qur'an (http://english.irib.ir/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=10728&Itemid=42).

Observations:

1) Geopolitically, these two developments illustrate, once again, the global struggle between Sunni Muslims--which the OIC largely is, being based in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia--and the Shi`a, led by Tehran.

2) We in the West, and Americans in particular, are frankly wrong to label Shi`i Iran (and Iraq) as the font of all evil and fanaticism emanating from the Islamic world. This is a hangover, I think--at least among Americans--of the hostage crisis in Iran during 1979-80, when Ayatollah Khomeini became for many in this country the face of Muslim extremism.
